Formerly known as the Santa Fe County Municipal Airport until its rechristening in 2018, the terminal spans a cozy 11,000 square feet, having undergone a thoughtful renovation back in 1988. While the airport has seen modest expansions over the years, it faced a challenging moment in June 1972 when Frontier Airlines and Texas International Airlines ceased operations due to concerns over runway safety.
Today, the Santa Fe Airport is a bustling hub that captures the essence of the region's air traffic, managing roughly one-fifth of New Mexico's flights. Daily, three commercial round-trips grace its runways, alongside a vibrant array of private aircraft. The airport has played host to an eclectic mix of distinguished guests, from the former British Prime Minister David Cameron to Texas magnate Trevor Rees-Jones. It's not uncommon to spot Goldman Sachs executives or even Hollywood directors mingling in the terminal.
Yet, beneath its charm, the Santa Fe Airport harbors aspirations for growth. A vital runway enhancement is on the horizon, with plans to extend runway 2-20. This ambitious project boasts a budget of $4.7 million, generously funded by the Federal Aviation Administration. The airport is poised to launch the bidding process as soon as the FAA budget receives the green light from Congress, signaling a new chapter in its storied history.
